Date:

A new movie showcasing the exploits of Australian horse racing legend Winx received rave reviews after premiering at the Sydney Film in Festival in June.

‘A Horse Named Winx’ chronicles the remarkable story of a mare who became a global sensation after reeling off 33 consecutive victories on the race track. Winx’s efforts helped her become a favourite with sports bettors worldwide, with many of them hitting the bookmakers hard whenever she ran.

Racing experts on platforms such as OnlyRacing regularly made Winx their nap of the day during her winning streak, further highlighting her popularity

These included Matt Abrahams, who has subsequently established himself one of the most respected horse racing tipsters in the Australian betting industry.

Much like Australia’s favourite mare, Abrahams has become a respected source for online bettors, and his tips have helped many of them make a consistent profit.

Premier horse racing tips platform TheGreatTipOff recently highlighted that point to perfection, with Abrahams making a $3,750 profit based on a $100 win bet stake on 20 selections.

His disciplined betting strategy bears many of the hallmarks displayed by top trainer Chris Waller when he was guiding Winx through her illustrious career.

Waller was the brains behind Winx’s amazing unbeaten streak, which featured 25 Group One wins, including four victories in the Cox Plate, Chipping Norton Stakes and George Ryder Stakes.

Journalist Andrew Rule, who wrote the film after penning a book about Winx, said only Lionel Rose’s bantamweight title win (1968) and Cathy Freeman’s 400m Olympic gold medal (2000) compared to Winx’s achievements.

“Winx is very similar to Cathy – neither was a totally imposing, charismatic person in the flesh, but obviously both were athletic freaks,” he told AAP. “And they were much loved by everybody, because they were unassuming, they were quiet and they were very good.

“Winx came along at a time when we were a far bigger society, far more complex, far more sophisticated, and yet despite all that competition, she managed against the odds to win public adoration and public attention.”

The affection felt for Winx was initially confined to the southern hemisphere, but quickly spread to racing jurisdictions overseas as her winning run continued.

Such was the manner of her dominance, experts who published horse racing tips backing against Winx became the source of great amusement for fans of the sport.

The four-time Australian Horse of the Year has continued to break records as a broodmare, with her only living foal sold for a mind-boggling $10 million in April.

The mare had nearly lost her life when her first foal was still-born, but she battled back to eventually give birth to a filly who has plenty to live up to on the race track.

If the youngster has inherited just a fraction of her mother’s talent, online betting sites and land-based bookmakers will need to take evasive action when she eventually makes her debut.
